Books used to end with a page like this — what the thing is set in, printed on, and bound with. A website about implementation should be able to account for its own.

Headlines and arguments. A serif with enough spine for policy writing.

Body text and captions. It gets out of the way, which is the whole job.

Caveat

The margin notes — a second, quieter voice running alongside the main text, wherever something is worth saying out of the corner of the mouth.

Construction

  • Built with Astro and Tailwind, shipped as plain static files. No framework runs in your browser to show you text.
  • No template and no site builder — the same hands that built Canopy built this.
  • No analytics and no trackers. If you read this site, that's between you and the site.
  • Every animation is switched off for readers who ask for reduced motion. It prints cleanly, too.

Three rules I wrote for myself

  1. 1

    Evidence over adjectives. Anything that sounds impressive should link to the thing itself.

  2. 2

    Effects only where they mean something. The word that fractures in the hero is the thesis of the entire site — that's why it's the only word that moves.

  3. 3

    Keep the two voices separate: formal text for what happened, handwriting for what I think about it. A reader should always know which one they're hearing.
